September is Move More September, an opportunity to think about how we can all build a little more movement into everyday life.
For older people, staying active can be particularly important. Regular movement can help maintain strength, balance and mobility, support independence and provide opportunities to get out, meet people, and stay connected.
And it doesn’t have to mean formal exercise.
Walking to the shops, spending time in the garden, taking the stairs where possible, joining a walking group or getting involved in activities within a housing scheme can all help people move more.
For those working across older people’s housing, there are lots of ways to make movement part of everyday life. That might mean making the most of gardens and communal spaces, organising walking groups or gentle exercise sessions, or simply thinking about how activities can encourage residents to get up and get involved.
It’s also important to recognise that everyone is different. Mobility, health, and confidence can all affect how active someone feels able to be, so opportunities need to be accessible and inclusive.
Sometimes, the smallest changes are the easiest to keep up.
What are you doing in your scheme or organisation to help older people stay active and independent?
