SUMMARY:"Reimagining ageing" lecture & debate
DESCRIPTION:A lecture and debate at The International Longevity Centre \nProfessor Stuart Gietel-Basten\, Associate Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology \nRespondents: \nProfessor Carol Jagger\, Professor of the Epidemiology of Ageing at Newcastle University \nSteven Baxter\, Club Vita \nPopulation ageing is often presented as an existential threat. And traditional demographic measures of ageing amplify the message that longevity creates an economic and social problem that needs to be solved. \nHowever\, these measures are based upon binary ideas: of being ‘old’ at 60 or 65\, and then becoming ‘dependent’ on the labour force aged below this age. \nRecent publications by Professor Stuart Gietel-Basten and his collaborators in Europe and the USA have turned this idea on its head\, presenting a radically different way of measuring ageing which\, in turn\, reconceptualises the entire concept of how longevity and society interact with each other. \nDuring this event\, Professor Gietel-Basten will set present his analysis and arguments\, before we debate whether we should adopt a new way of measuring ageing and how can we can make this happen. \nThe ILC is the UK’s specialist think tank on the impact of longevity on society\, and what happens next.

SUMMARY:erosh/CIH Cymru's Older People's Housing Conference
DESCRIPTION:Wales has the highest proportion of older people compared to the rest of the UK. Whilst fortunate in many ways\, with older people contributing massively to the economy and their local communities through sharing skills and expertise there can be no doubt that considerable challenges lie ahead in providing high quality\, sustainable housing\, care and support. \nThe mounting pressure on health and social care services\, increases in people living with multiple co-morbidities and sector specific challenges like the application of the Local Housing Allowance rate to social homes from 2019 all combine to question how we continue to meet demand\, enhance affordability and increase quality. \nThis year’s Older People’s Housing Conference in partnership with erosh will once again see a range of expert speakers look at these pressing issues and consider the future beyond the horizon. \nWho should attend\nAnyone who works to deliver housing and related support services to older people. There’s a focus for frontline staff\, particularly wardens and sheltered housing managers. \nFor further information please click here. \nTo book\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Housing - making a difference - East Midlands centenary event
DESCRIPTION:The history of housing management\, and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH)\, was sparked by the work of pioneers of social reform such as Octavia Hill who were opposed to appalling housing conditions in the second half of the 19th century. CIH can trace it’s roots as a profession back to 1916\, when the first professional body for housing\, the Association for Women Housing Workers\, was founded. \nIn 2016\, our centenary year\, it is fitting for CIH to celebrate Octavia’s legacy as one of the greatest social entrepreneurs in British History and contribution to Social Housing. \nTo commemorate this milestone\, a special event is being organised by CIH East Midlands Regional Board. \nThe event will consist of some key speeches made by a variety of personalities in the sector\, in order to appreciate Octavia’s legacy on housing and peoples lives and the inspiration we can draw from this legacy as we look to shape the industry for the future. \nFor further details and to book\, please visit: http://www.cih.org/events/display/vpathDCR/templatedata/cih/events/data/Housing_-_making_a_difference_-_East_midlands_centenary_event
