Alcohol doesn’t affect everyone in the same way, and as we get older, even small amounts can have a greater impact on our health, wellbeing and independence.
That’s why Alcohol Awareness Week is an important opportunity to raise awareness, encourage open conversations and remind people that support is always available.
For professionals working with older people, it’s also a chance to reflect on how alcohol may be affecting the individuals we support. Sometimes the signs can be easy to overlook or mistaken for something else. A simple, compassionate conversation can make all the difference.
Creating environments where people feel safe to talk without fear of judgement is key. Whether it’s sharing information, recognising when someone may need extra support or simply listening, every interaction has the potential to have a positive impact.
This Alcohol Awareness Week, let’s continue working together to promote healthier ageing, reduce stigma and ensure older people have access to the understanding and support they deserve.
