Ensuring the quality of your older people’s accommodation and services meets national standards.

Rural communities offer so much for older people. Strong community ties, familiar surroundings and a slower pace of life all contribute to wellbeing. However, they can also bring unique challenges.

Limited public transport, fewer local services and greater distances between friends, family and essential amenities can increase the risk of loneliness and social isolation, particularly as people become less mobile.

That’s where high-quality independent living schemes and services can make such a difference.

Independent living is about far more than providing housing. It creates opportunities for connection, reassurance and belonging. Whether it’s organised social activities, shared communal spaces, wellbeing support, regular welfare checks or simply having someone nearby to notice when things aren’t quite right, these services help people remain independent while staying connected to their community.

This week, the National Housing Federation is marking Rural Housing Week, highlighting the importance of providing homes that support thriving rural communities. That includes recognising that tackling loneliness isn’t just about creating more homes. It’s about creating places where people can continue to thrive, wherever they live.

If you’re looking for practical ideas to help reduce loneliness and social isolation among older people, our Good Practice Guide, Addressing Loneliness and Social Isolation in Older People, shares practical advice, examples of good practice and approaches that organisations can adapt within their own services.

Together, we can help ensure that growing older in a rural community never has to mean growing more isolated.

If you’re not yet an erosh member and would like access to our full library of Good Practice Guides, specialist resources, training, events and a network of professionals committed to improving independent living services, we’d love to welcome you.
