Awards Finalist – RCT Homes – Valleys, Views and Voices

RCT Homes works in partnership with RNIB Cymru/Action on Hearing Loss to develop services for tenants with sensory loss including a Sensory Support Officer to ensure outcomes based housing related support is offered to help tenants sustain and fulfil their tenancies. Coffee mornings promote good eye/ear health and encourage tenants to participate in social activities and to make the most of the sight/hearing they have. Tenants are also trained to undertake scheme assessments alongside scheme managers/maintenance staff.

Why we liked this project

This project has wide ranging benefits for people with sight hearing loss who may not have previously accessed services – empowerment/independence, physical/mental health and well-being; and addresses a number of key issues – social isolation/loneliness, depression, social/digital exclusion, discrimination, falls/accidents etc. Older people in the community are also reached through existing contact with schemes as well as tenants in general needs properties through the work of the dedicated Sensory Support Officer. There is a formal link with the RNIB Cymru’s Visibly Better Campaign in accordance with which three sheltered schemes have been accredited. RCT is also working towards the Action on Hearing Loss Louder than Words Charter Mark. We particularly liked tenants being recruited and trained to be Scheme Assessors.
