We were profoundly shocked and saddened by the terrible fire at Grenfell Tower last week. Many of our members are understandably choosing to reassess their approach to fire safety. For some time, fire safety has been one of the most common issues raised by erosh members. Members have experienced very different approaches in relation to responding to alarms and false alarms, inspections, fire boxes, and stay put policies. There are often significant inconsistencies between advice and guidance given by different local authority Fire & Rescue Services, between inspecting fire officers and fire officers who attend a fire alarm activation.
This has left our members uncertain about the correct, most effective approach to ensuring the safety of their residents in the case of fire and fire prevention.
We have therefore developed a new erosh guide as a handy source of general information in relation to fire safety in sheltered and retirement housing which highlights key considerations and signposts you to sources of pertinent information. Our guide, aimed at scheme managers, has been developed with the help of key experts from Fire & Rescue Services in England and Wales and complements the new more detailed and technical Fire Safety in Specialised Housing guidance (aimed at service managers) from the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC).
